Just in time for Christmas! Scottish garden centre grows 50,000 poinsettias | Garden | Life & Style

The festive flowers are pictured at a Scottish garden centre where they are being prepared before being sold in around 30 centres in Scotland and England.

Carolyn Spray, 49, who lives and works at the Pentland Plants garden centre in Loanhead, Midlothian, said they have grown a beautiful crop of 50,000 this year.

She said: “We have to grow the poinsettia plants in huge greenhouses. Luckily we can do it at the garden centre.

“We’re no longer supplying the supermarkets, only other garden centres in Scotland and the North of England.

“Supplying to garden centres alone allows us to grow a better variety of crops, with small ones and big ones, and a whole range of colours.”

Poinsettia plants are native to Mexico but are hugely popular around the world due to their use as Christmas decorations.

Ms Spray has made sure people can buy the plants no matter what their colour preference is.

She said: “Red is obviously the most popular colour for the plants at Christmas but we grow them in many different colours.

“We have got pink and white ones this year, and lots of other colourful ones, so people can keep them long after the Christmas period.

“They are a house plant, so as long as they are given light and looked after properly they will last.”

Ms Spray has been selling the plants commercially for more than 25 years after her grandfather first introduced them to Britain back in the 1960s.

She said: “Back then people didn’t want them.

“But now they have become a real part of Christmas and have been added to the list of things we have during the festivities.

“People get their Turkey and the trees and their poinsettias.”
